Frequently Asked Questions

How can you tell which deck is best for you?

We use a variety of decking materials, including composite, vinyl, cedar and pressure treated.

If you prefer a more natural appearance, cedar decking is ideal. It is a strong wood that adjusts to the moisture in the air surrounding it, making it less prone to warping and cracking. Although its surface can be easily stained or sealed, it can still be dented by heavy patio furniture or scratched by pets or children.

Vinyl decking is a waterproof membrane that comes in a variety of styles and colours to resemble the various finishes seen on materials such as wood and stone. This long-lasting decking is stain and fade resistant, as well as entirely water resistant; it will not warp or splinter. However, if you reside in an area prone to heat waves, the surface can become unbearably hot.

Composite decking resembles natural wood and is available in a wide range of colours. Decks produced from this material will endure a lifetime and will not split, warp, or break. Composite is incredibly durable and simple to clean and maintain; it can withstand any weather and is resistant to Wet-Humid-Hot-Dry-Cold-Snow, wind, and salt.

Pressure treated decking is another great option, with a lower initial investment than the previous options pressure treated decking offers great value.

Each material has advantages and disadvantages, but there is one that is ideal for your home. We would love to help you figure out which option is for you. Visit our website to start a consultation.

Which is the best place to mount deck railings?

Did you know that railings can be mounted on to the fascia of a deck, or directly on top of the deck?

Keep reading to find out which one would be best for your deck.

Deck mounts are attached to the top surface of the deck and are sometimes also known as surface-mounted, floor mounts. The advantage of a deck mount is how much easier it makes installation, a very strong railing can be achieved just by adding blocking between joists where the posts will be mounted. The biggest disadvantage of deck mount railings is when you are installing them on a vinyl deck it requires you to put holes in your new waterproof membrane. Thats why for vinyl decks we always recommend fascia mounted railings. The other downside is because they are mounted to your deck surface, they effectively make your deck smaller. For smaller decks with limited space you might want to try a fascia mount. The mounting hardware is more visible, which could be an advantage or disadvantage depending on your own style.

Fascia mounts are attached to the side of the deck and are also known as side mounts. If you have a small deck, the fascia mount will be positioned on the outside, giving you a few extra inches. Most people spend time on their deck looking out at their vista, and the post attachment is hidden from view with the fascia mount causing as little disruption to your view as possible. Fascia mount might save you time by reducing the need to sweep, dust or shovel snow around the posts and under the railings. Fascia Mount railings require the fascia to be doubled up and secured to the joists with extra hangers and hardware, which adds to your investment.
